DEEP RELAXATION WORK -
NOT AN OXYMORON ANYMORE WITH LOU BENSON

Studies have shown that the number one reason people seek massage is stress reduction, and stress is routinely understood to be a causal or consequential factor in most disease processes. The effectiveness of massage in reducing the various physiological and psychological effects of stress has also been demonstrated in many scientific studies. Why then is relaxation work so often diminished as “fluff and buff” within the massage community? The goal of this class is to sing the praises of relaxation massage and acknowledge its place at the center of nearly every type of deep work.
In this class we’ll plumb the depths of our strength and gentleness to explore the elements that go into making relaxation massage flow seamlessly and soulfully: balanced body mechanics, full palpatory attention, relaxed hands, meeting the tissue at its resistance and pace, expert draping - these are the nuances of a stroke that feels complete unto itself, yet flows into the next stroke or body segment like Clark Kent slipping unnoticed into the nearest phone booth. And of course, we’ll create lots of techniques from the springboard provided by effleurage, petrissage, friction, vibration and tapotement.
We’ll meet for 4 Monday evenings in a row. The first class will focus on prone work for the back, hips and legs. The second class will focus on supine work for the legs and arms. The third class will focus on work for the abdomen, chest, neck, face and head. The fourth class will focus on working with clients in a sidelying position.
It’s time to redefine deep work.
